Abstract:

Provided is a liquid crystal display apparatus having improved viewing-angle characteristics in a region which is vertically asymmetrical with respect to the front horizontal direction. This liquid crystal display apparatus is provided with: a liquid crystal cell that is provided with a liquid crystal layer including liquid crystal molecules oriented in a homogeneous arrangement in a state where no electric field exists; a first polarizer that is disposed on the viewing side of the liquid crystal cell; a second polarizer that is disposed on the backside of the liquid crystal cell; a first optical compensation layer that is disposed between the liquid crystal cell and the first polarizer; and a second optical compensation layer that is disposed between the liquid crystal cell and the first optical compensation layer. The refractive index nz1 in the thickness direction of the first optical compensation layer is less than 1.5187, and the refractive index nz2 in the thickness direction of the second optical compensation layer is less than 1.5340.
