A noncontact coater and a papermaking machine in each of which the vapor of a wetting liquid is used to form a wetting liquid film on a surface of a web immediately before coating to prevent air inclusion between a coating fluid film and the web surface. The noncontact coater ejects a coating fluid (5) in a curtain form from a slit nozzle (3) and applies this coating fluid (5) to a running web (1) in a non-contact manner. In order that the coater might inhibit the wetting liquid vapor from condensing and prevent the coated surface from having streaks, it has a constitution including: a hood (11) for surrounding a space around the web (1), the hood (11) being not in contact with the web (1) and being disposed upstream in the web running direction from the point (5a) where the coating fluid is delivered to the web (1); a vapor nozzle (12) which is disposed inside the hood (11) and supplies the vapor of a wetting liquid to the web surface; and a heating means which heats the inside of the hood (11).
