Abstract:
The present invention pertains to a compound represented by general formula (i), wherein at least two secondary carbon atoms in an alkyl group (linear alkyl group, halogenated alkyl group or cyanated alkyl group having 3-40 carbon atoms) of group Ki1 are substituted with -C(=Xi1)- and/or -CH(CN)-(Xi1 is an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, NH or NR13), and group Ai2, Ai3 or Ki1 has, as a substituent, at least one Pi1-Spi1-group (Pi1 is a polymerizable group, and Spi1 is a spacer group or a single bond). The compound represented by general formula (i) is contained in a liquid crystal composition, whereby the liquid crystal composition is adsorbed on a substrate clamping a liquid crystal layer, and liquid crystal molecules can be held in a state of being aligned in the vertical direction without an alignment film.
