In this vehicle body structure for an automobile, because a raised section (28) that is raised from the vehicle-width-direction outer surface (12a) of a center pillar (12) is disposed at a position sandwiched between an upper hinge (24) and a lower hinge (25) disposed on the vehicle-width-direction outer surface, when doors (17, 19) are moved inward by a collision load in a side collision, the vehicle-width-direction inner surfaces of the doors (17, 19) instantly come into contact with the raised section (28), thereby transmitting the collision load to the center pillar (12). As a result, it is possible to cause the center pillar (12) to generate a counterforce in the initial stage of the collision, thereby increasing the amount of energy absorption. Furthermore, because the raised section (28) does not interfere with the upper hinge (24) and lower hinge (25), opening/closing of the rear door (19) is never hindered, and also because no concentrated load acts on the upper hinge (24) and lower hinge (25), the need for reinforcing the mounting parts of the hinges and increasing the thickness of the center pillar (12) can be eliminated, thereby contributing to weight reduction.
