Compositions for enhancing the barrier function of the skin comprises carbohydrate derivatives (I). Compositions for enhancing the barrier function of the skin comprises carbohydrate derivatives of formula, R-X-A (I): A : a chain of 1-20 carbohydrate units, preferably linked by acetal bridges, each having 3-6C atoms and being optionally substituted, e.g. by halogen, amine, acid, ester, thiol, alkoxy, thioether, thioester, amide, carbamate or urea functions; R : 1-24C alkyl or alkenyl, optionally interrupted by ether bridges and optionally substituted by a hydroxy, carboxylic acid, amine, ester, acyloxy, amide, ether, carbamate or urea function; and X : a linking group.
