Abstract:

A monitoring device for an ignition end stage in an internal combustion engine comprises a make time limiting device for the ignition end stage (5), which is supplied by a supply voltage (UBATT?). The make time limiting device is set in operation by a control signal when the make time is determined, and controls the ignition end stage for ignition in the event that ignition does not occur before the limiting time expires. According to the invention, the duration of the limiting time (t = f (UBATT?)) can be varied, in function of the supply voltage (UBATT?), so that it decreases with increase in the supply voltage (UBATT?). This prevents thermal damage or destruction of an ignition end stage due to excessively long make times. In addition, overdimensioning of an ignition end stage is unnecessary.
