Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination device and a projection which can be simplified in a structure and reduced in size.SOLUTION: An illumination device includes: a light source device; a polarization conversion element which uniformizes a polarization direction of light emitted from the light source device; and a uniformizing device for uniformizing illuminance on a surface orthogonal to a center shaft of light incident from the polarization conversion element. The polarization conversion element includes: a polarized light separation layer which makes one polarization light transmit and makes the other polarization light reflect from among the light emitted from the light source; a reflection layer for reflecting the other polarized light reflected by the polarized separation layer in the same direction as the advancing direction of one polarized light which transmits the polarized light separation layer; and a phase difference layer arranged on any optical path of one polarized light transmitting the polarized light separation layer and the other polarized light reflected by the reflection layer and converting a polarizing direction of the polarized light. The polarized light conversion element includes one set of a polarized light separation layer, the reflection layer, and the phase difference layer.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
