PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a presursor for diphenylmethane diisocyanate, etc. industrially and advantageously in high selectivity, by reacting an N-phenylcarbamate with a methylating agent under specific conditions, and separating the reaction mixture. CONSTITUTION:An N-phenylcarbamate is reacted with a methylating agent to give diphenylmethane carbamate. In the process, the N-phenylcarbamate in an amount of 2mol or more based on one mole methylene group in the methylating agent is reacted with the methylating agent in the presence of an aqueous solution of an inorganic acid or further an organic solvent at 40-150 deg.C temperature in the liquid phase, and the resultant reaction mixture is then subjected to the phase separation into the aqueous solution of the inorganic acid and the reaction mixture in the organic phase containing substantially no inorganic acid. The aqueous solution of the inorganic acid is then circulated through the reaction step in the liquid phase, and the reaction mixture in the organic phase is treated in the presence of the N-phenylcarbamate and a solid acid at 40-200 deg.C temperature.
