Provided is a power transmission device that keeps the device from becoming much more complex or larger, with which startup performance is improved using the torque amplifying function of a torque converter, and with which power transmission efficiency when traveling steadily is improved. The device has a torque converter (1) that has a torque amplifying function, a clutch means (3), that has a first clutch means (3a) that can be operated when the vehicle moves forward and that transmits engine drive power to the drive wheels through the drive transmission system of the torque converter (1) and a second clutch means (3b) that transmits engine drive power to the drive wheels not through the drive transmission system of the torque converter (1), and a selection means (4) that selectively operates the first clutch means (3a) or the second clutch means (3b) according to vehicle state.
