Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL:2-( 4-Methoxyphenyl )-5-( 2-dimethylaminoethyl )-1,5-benzothiaze pine-3,4(5H)-dioxo-2-carboxylic acid of formula I (R is H or alkyl) and its alkyl ester.
USE: An intermediate for diltiazem hydrochloride useful as a coronary vasodilator, especially a remedy for effort angina or stenocardia caused by inveterate myocardial infraction.
PREPARATION: The compound of formula I can be produced either by cyclizing the compound of formula II in an organic solvent or by reacting the compound of formula II with oxalyl chloride or methoxalyl chloride in an organic solvent and cyclizing the resultant compound of formula III.
