To obtain a new compound capable of effectively using the spectrum of mercury-vapor lamp, useful as a photopolymerization initiator having an excellent radical generation efficiency.
4-(Tribromomethylsulfonyl)benzophenone is represented by the following formula (1). This method for producing 4-(tribromomethylsulfonyl) benzophenone of the formula (1) is characterized in that 4-(benzoyl) phenylthioacetic acid of the following formula (2) (M is a hydrogen atom or an alkali metal atom) or its salt is oxidized and brominated.
