PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the quick responsiveness and stability of convergence of the concentration of a downstream side of a catalyst device by obtaining the correction variable so that the condition variable of the concentration of a specified component of the exhaust gas in the sliding mode control for converging the concentration to the predetermined appropriate value is converged to a super flat surface of the sliding mode control.
SOLUTION: A control unit 8 is provided with a reference air-fuel ratio setting unit 15, a target air-fuel ratio computing unit 16 and a feedback control unit 17 or the like. The target air-fuel ratio computing unit 16 corrects the reference air-fuel ratio so that the oxygen concentration detected by a O2 sensor becomes the appropriate, at which purifying ability of a catalyst device 4 becomes maximum, and obtains the target air-fuel ratio of an upstream side of the catalyst device 4. Correction variable for correcting the reference air-fuel ratio is obtained by a condition estimating unit 18 and an adaptation sliding mode control unit 19, and at this stage, a super flat surface is set by a linear function using condition variable of an exhaust system, which includes degree of change in the oxygen concentration, as a variable, and correction variable is obtained so that the condition variable of the exhaust system is converged onto this super-flat surface.
