To obtain a novel liquid-crystalline compound which can develop a large dielectric anisotropy and excellent cold compatibility with liquid crystal compositions and is useful in a liquid crystal display element which can be driven by a low voltage with high reliability.
This compound is represented by formula I (R0 and R1 are each a 1-10C alkyl; ring A0-ring A3 are each 1,4-cyclohexylene; Z0-Z3 are each -CH2CH2-, a single bond; Q1 and Q2 are each H, a halogen; Q3 is Q1; Y is a halogen; l, m, n, o are each 0-2 where their total is 3 or less), typically 3,4- difluoro-5-ethoxy-[trans-4-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)cyclohexyl]benzene. The compound of formula I is prepared by preparing a Grignard reagent from a compound of formula II, allowing a compound of formula III to react with the Grignard reagent to form a cyclohexanol derivative, dehydrating the cyclohexanol derivative followed by catalytic hydrogenation the dehydrated product.
