Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound, useful as an intermediate for crop-selective herbicides, e.g. 1-{[o-(cyclopropylcarbonyl)phenyl]-sulfamoyl}-3-(4,6- dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl)urea.
SOLUTION: This compound is shown by formula I [R is a 1-6C alkyl or (substituted) phenyl; R1 is H, cyano, nitro, a halogen, formyl, (substituted) 1-4C alkyl or the like; and X is a (CH2)3-Y (Y is Cl, Br or hydroxy), cyclopropyl or tetrahydro-2-oxo-3-furoyl], e.g. 2'-(cyclopropylcarbonyl)-p-toluenesulfonanilide. The compound shown by formula I is obtained, e.g. by a series of steps, (1) reaction of a compound shown by formula II with a compound shown by formula III in the presence of a base and organic solvent, (2) isolation of a compound shown by formula IV from the effluent of the above reaction by hydrolysis or crystallization, (3) reaction of the compound shown by formula IV with concentrated HCl in the presence of an organic solvent to form a compound shown by formula V, (4) treatment of the compound shown by formula V with an aqueous base at high temperature, and (5) isolation of the objective compound from the above effluent.
