PURPOSE: To provide a novel anthraquinonyldicarbazole compound which is useful for synthesis of a novel benzobisindoloacridine having the absorption maximum in the area of wavelength longer than that of the conventional compounds.

CONSTITUTION: A compound of the formula (Rk, Rl, Rm, Rk', Rl' and Rm' are each H, lower alkyl, phenyl, halogen), for example, 9,9'-(1,5-anthraquinonyl) dicarbazole. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by the reaction of an anthraquinone bearing substituents: Rm, Rm' with two molecules of carbazole bearing substituents: Rk, Rl or Rk', Rl' in nitrobenzene.
