To obtain an inexpensive composition having the higher antibacterial property and fungicidal property, and kneadable into a molten resin without lowering impact strength by compounding a zinc oxide as an antibacterial agent and a specific compound into a thermoplastic resin.
This antibacterial resin composition is composed of (A) 99.8-90wt.% of a thermoplastic resin (preferably a styrenic resin, an olefinic resin, a methacrylic resin and a polyvinyl chloride-based resin), (B) 0.1-5wt.% of zinc oxide (preferably having 0.2-0.75μm particle diameter) and (C) 0.1-5wt.% of a compound of the formula: RSM [R is a substituting group; M is an alkaline (earth) metal] (e.g. a sodium salt of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole). Preferably, weight- average molecular weight of the component A is 50,000800,000. Preferably, the component C has an alkaline nature. Preferably, the compounding amounts of the components B and C are respectively 0.8-3wt.%.
