A cutting device A comprises a plasma cutting torch 4 having electrodes, a moving means consisting of a frame 2 and a traversing carrier 3, a cutting surface plate 7 for loading a material to be cut, a power unit 12, cabtyre cords 11 connected to a plurality of different positions (grounding positions 7a to 7f) in the cutting surface plate 7 via switches 12a to 13f, a recognition means (control unit 8) for recognizing the position of the cutting torch 4 in the material B to be cut, and a controller 14 for selectively controlling the switches 12a to 13f according to the recognized position.
