PURPOSE: To prepare a new carbonyl group-contg. degradable chelating agent particularly effective for the maintenance of the bleaching effect of detergents.
CONSTITUTION: The compd. of the formula [R1 to R4 are each H, hydroxy-alkyl, C (R6)2COOH, ammonium, amine or the alkali metal salts thereof, where ≥3 in R1 to R4 are each C (R6)2COOH or the salt thereof; R5 is an alkylene having ≥1 CO; R6 is H, a 1-4C straight or branched chain alkyl] such as N,N'-(1- oxo-1,2-ethanediyl)-bis [N-(crboxymethyl)glycin] (OXOETA). The compd. (OXOEDTA) is produced by reacting imidodisodium triacetate with nitrilotriacetic acid. Furthermore, the compd. of the formula is blended into a cleaning composition contg. an organic detergent surfactant in the shape of water soluble salt, particularly, of alkali metal salt, ammonium salt or alkylammonium salt as a degradable chelating agent.
