To provide a card overlay apparatus dispensing with the replacement of a thermal transfer roller corresponding to the surface having magnetic stripes formed thereon of a card and the surface having no magnetic stripes formed thereon of the card, low in cost and reduced in its installation space.
Since a thermal transfer roller 4002 is constituted so that the first large diameter part thereof extends over the almost entire area of a first region Al in the direction crossing the extending direction of the magnetic stripes ST of a card C at a right angle and the second large diameter part 4002C thereof extends over the almost entire area of a second region A2, an overlay film 4010 is pressed to the first and second regions A1, A2 of the card C under heating by the thermal transfer roller 4002 to thermally transfer a protective layer. Since the overlay film 4010 is not pressed to the part of the magnetic stripes ST wherein a small diameter part extends by the thermal transfer roller 4002, the protective layer is not thermally transferred.
