Abstract:
PURPOSE:To make cathode overvoltage lower economically, by forming Fe3O4 on the surface of iron cathode. CONSTITUTION:After an iron cathode is washed with water, or with acid if necessary, in order to clean the electrode surface, it is held in a reactor, where it is treated with steam at 90-170 deg.C for 3-13 hrs. to form black Fe3O4 layer on the surface of the iron cathode. After completion of the reaction, H2 gas remained in the reactor is removed by the flow of N2 gas, then, after cooled, the electrode is taken out. This electrode is useful for the electrolysis of aq. soln., especially of common salt.
