The character input device has a word table having stored therein notations of words and their readings correlated with each other, a heading table having stored therein headings corresponding to the readings of a plurality of the words, a display part having a retrieval screen which displays retrieval contents and an input screen which displays input contents, and an instruction part which instructs retrieval, of the individual tables, scrolling and determination. Further, the device is comprised of a word retrieval part which retrieves a heading and a notation of a word with reference to the individual tables in accordance with an instruction issued by the instruction part, a switch part which switches the retrieval contents being displayed on the retrieval screen in accordance with the instruction issued by the instruction part, a scrolling part which scrolls a target part in the retrieval contents to a predetermined place on the retrieval screen in accordance with the instruction issued by the instruction part, and a determination part which determines the notation of the word present in the predetermined place and inputs it to the input screen in accordance with the instruction issued by the instruction part to input a character while reducing the number of times of retrieval thereof more.
