PURPOSE: To provide a coating applicator for coating webs consisting of paper or cardboard which has a backing roller for guiding the webs in the region of at least the coating applicator and a nozzle which is connected to or integrated with a support beam and supplies coating material.

CONSTITUTION: The support beam 24 is provided with a guide surface and an angular, sharp discharging edge on the end of the guide surface 10. The guide surface approaches the outside surface of the backing roller 1 gradually toward its discharging edge, while in the area of the discharging edges deviating at an angle from 0° to 10° in maximum from the tangent direction of the backing roller 1 existing therein. The guide surface forms together with the backing roller 1 an applicator gap in which a hydrodynamic pressure prevails.
