Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely prevent the generation of shock occurred at the time when rich spike process is interrupted and a combustion system is returned to a system in which the combustion system is adapted for an engine operation state.
SOLUTION: An electronic control unit(ECU) 60 of engine 10 stepwise switches over lean burn such as stratified charge combustion, weak stratified charge combustion, uniform lean combustion to an uniform rich combustion, and carries out a stepwise switching over process (rich spike process) in which the uniform lean combustion is switched over to a combustion system which is adapted for an engine operation state. When the engine operation state is deviated from a predetermined operation region, the ECU 60 stops the rich spike process and stepwise switches over the combustion system to a system which is adapted for the engine operation state. In the course of the switching over operation, the ECU 60 sets a combustion system maintaining period for maintaining the same combustion system longer than the combustion system maintaining period during the rich spike process.
