To obtain a preventive and therapeutic medicine containing a specific condensed pyrrole derivative as an active ingredient, having an excellent steroid 5α-reductase-inhibiting action, and useful for preventing and treating alopecia, acne, prostatomegaly, prostatic cancer, etc.
This medicine contains a compound of formula I [W is O, S; E is a single bond, a 1-6C alkylene; the ring D is (partially saturated) benzene, a 3-7C cycloalkane, naphthalene, a benzo 5-7C cycloalkane, indene, a four to seven-membered heterocyclic group containing an S or O atom, etc.; R1, R2 are each H, an alkyl; R3 is R1, a 1-4C alkoxy, CF3, OH, etc.), its salt or acid adduct {e.g. 5-[(4'-ethylbiphenyl-4-yl)carbonyl]-1,2-dihydro-3H-pyrrolo[1,2- a]pyrrole-1-carboxylic acid}. The compound of formula I wherein R1 is H and W is O is obtained by hydrolyzing a compound of formula II (R1a is a 1-4C alkyl).
