Abstract:

To reduce crank noise and other NVH which are undesirable for a driver and which are generated in transition of mode requested by the driver or change of a performance of an automobile in a lash region of a transmission of the automobile or other automobile drive system.

A method for controlling a propulsion system for an automobile including a transmission 14 coupling an output shaft 40 of the internal combustion engine 10 to a drive wheel 18 of the automobile and including the lash region, comprises a process adjusting an operating parameter of the engine 10 so that at least one cylinder 30 of the engine 10 is transitioned between a first combustion mode and a second combustion mode, and a process varying a timing of the transition of combustion mode responsive to whether the transmission 14 is operating within the lash region.
