PURPOSE: To decrease the data quantity occupied by a function character and to simplify the editing of a text by changing the combination of the function character into a fixed form and giving a macro-description to the combination of a fixed form for editing a KANJI (Chinese character) text, etc.

CONSTITUTION: The definition information on a macro-function character is fed previously to a register 1, and this information consists of the macro-function characters FG1WFGn and a function character GFCi obtained by grouping these macro-function characters. Then the definition information is stored to a memory 4 via a write/read control circuit 3. Then the GFCi given from a register 2 is discriminated by a discriminator 5, and the character group corresponding to the GFCi is read out of the circuit 3 and the memory 4 and set to a reading gate group 8 and a register group 7 respectively. The ordinary character FCj is discriminated by a discriminator 6 and set to the group 7. A KANJI text editing operator 10 edits the text from the set characters and the data codes of the register 2 and is reset by a reset signal give from a register 9.
