Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a cutting tool made of surface treated TiCN type cermet, having superior machinability over a long period, by forming a hard coating layer composed of the carbides, nitrides, or carbonitrides of Ti and specific metals on the surface of a cutting tool prepared by using hard TiCN type cermet as a base material.
CONSTITUTION: A powder of Co or CoCNi, as a binding material at the time of sintering, is mixed by 1-30wt.% with a hard TiCN powder. The resulting powder mixture is compacted and sintered, by which a cutting tool made of sintered alloy in which hard TiCN cermet is used as a base material is prepared. Then, on the surface of this cutting tool, a hard coating layer consisting of TiC, TiN, TiCN, or TiCAl, and the carbides, nitrides, or carbonitrides of Hf, Zr, etc., is formed by means of physical vapor deposition. Moreover, a layer of 0.01-0.5μm thickness, composed of an intermetallic compound of Co and Al, Hf, Zr, etc., is allowed to exist in the interface between the coating layer and the base material of cermet. By this method, the cutting tool made of TiCN type cermet, increased in adhesion between the base material and the hard coating layer and excellent in properties of continuous cutting and high speed cutting, can be obtained.
