PURPOSE: To enable prevention of the slack of filter cloths by providing a braking device to the roller of a press having the upper and lower filter cloths which are wound on many rollers and dehydrate sludge while grasping the sludge therebetween and hunting.
CONSTITUTION: The sludge to be treated is grasped between upper and lower endless traveling filter cloths 2, 3 wound on many rollers 1 and is dehydrated during hunting and traveling of the filter cloths. A braking device 5 which brakes the rotation of the device itself or of a roller shaft 4 is provided to an optional roller (usually a driven roller) 1a just before generation of a slack S in the filter cloths of the roller 1. If the slack S arises, the device 5 is actuated to brake the roller 1a. Then the cloths 2, 3 are slipped forcibly on the roller 1a. The cloth 3 is thus returned more excessively than 2 or the cloth 2 is returned earlier than 2 by which the generated slack S is corrected and the need for stopping the operation, resetting the filter cloths, etc. as in the prior art is thoroughly eliminated.
