PURPOSE: To reduce a time necessary for settling and washing the silver halide emulsion by specifying a depth to inner diameter ratio of the vessel of the settling-washing device for desalting the silver halide emulsion.

CONSTITUTION: Silver salt and halide solution are added to an aqueous solution of a dispersion medium to form emulsion grains and then, soluble salts in this emulsion are removed by using this settling-washing device. The settling-washing vessel 1 of this device has a volume of ≥50l and this depth to inner diameter ratio is regulated to i1.1, thus permitting the settling time to be shortened and treatment efficiency to be enhanced. It is preferred to provide the upper end of the vessel with an upward bend because the vessel 1 is shallow and the emulsion is apt to overflow.
