Abstract:
PURPOSE:To provide the title polymer easy to synthesize, excellent in solubility or dispersibility to solvents, useful as a raw material for nonlinear optical elements, etc., having carboxylic acid-based substituent(s) at the phenyl group. CONSTITUTION:The objective polymer 2-5000 in number-average polymerization degree, made up of recurring unit of formula I [X is COOH or COO<->; A to C are each X or COOR (R is 1-4C organic group); where, counter cation of COO<-> is typical element or transitional metal, etc.]. The present polymer can be obtained, for example, by the following method: 4-ethynyl phthalic anhydride is refluxed under heating in a sulfuric acid catalyst-contg. anhydrous methanol to produce dimethyl 4-ethynyl phthalic anhydride, then is reacted in pyridine in the presence of copper chloride while blowing oxygen to produce tetramethyl 4,4'-(1,3-butadiiso-1,4-diyl)bis(phthalate) of formula II, which is then irradiated with alpha-rays to make polymerization.
