Abstract:

To provide a guest-host type liquid crystal composition having a high dichroic ratio over a wavelength range of 400-650 nm, and to provide a dichroic dye composition used therefor.

The dichroic dye composition contains at least one kind of a dichroic dye from each group, shown by (I)-(IV) groups: (I) a dichroic azo dye is a monoazo dye formed by connecting two benzene rings by an azo group, and having an amino group; (II) a dichroic azo dye is a disazo dye formed by connecting a benzene ring to a naphthalene ring by an azo group, and having an amino group in the benzene ring; (III) a dichroic azo dye is a disazo dye formed by connecting a benzene ring to a naphthalene ring by an azo group, and having an amino group in the benzene ring; and (IV) a dichroic azo dye is a trisazo dye formed by connecting one benzene ring to three naphthalene rings by an azo group, and having a structure in which naphthalene rings on both terminals have each an amino group.
