To obtain a dihydronaphthalene derivative as a liquid crystal compound allowing the temperature range of the liquid crystal phase to expand, and allowing the response time and the threshold voltage to effectively decrease, and to obtain a liquid crystal composition and a liquid crystal display element each having a rapid-response and a low driving voltage by using the compound.
The liquid crystal compound represented by formula (1), and the liquid crystal composition and the liquid crystal display element containing this compound are provided. The liquid crystal display element using the compound is very useful as an STN and an AM-LCD due to having a lowering effect on the threshold voltage without improving or worsening the response time.
