To provide a display device, such as a color liquid crystal display, that can display sharper images by the increased luminance, while suppressing changes in the hue in the color display.
Each of a plurality of pixels, arranged into a matrix form, includes picture elements of four colors, comprising R (red), G (green), B (blue) and W (white) picture elements. A reverse gamma correction unit 2 is provided for subjecting each of inputted color signals 1 of red, green and blue for reverse gamma correction. There are provided, as distribution processing units, a luminance ratio calculation unit 3, a luminance expansion rate calculation unit 4 and a sorting unit 6 for sorting the reverse gamma corrected color signals to generate processed color signals of four colors, including white, to be output. A gamma correction unit 8 that subjects the processed signals of four colors to gamma correction and outputs them.
