Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive carbon electrode material for redox flow battery having high activity.SOLUTION: A carbon electrode material for redox flow battery consists of a nonwoven fabric or a woven fabric of carbonaceous fibers having a pseudo-graphite where the<002>plane interval obtained by X-ray wide angle analysis is 3.43-3.60 Å, the size of a crystallite in the c-axis direction is 15-50 Å, and the size of a crystallite in the a-axis direction is 30-75 Å, a carbonaceous material having the number of bound oxygen atoms on the surface obtained by XPS surface analysis is 1.0% or more of the number of carbon atoms of the entire surface contains nitrogen atoms and carbon atoms, the nitrogen atoms includes first nitrogen atoms where the binding energy of N1s electrons is 398.5±0.5 eV, and second nitrogen atoms where the binding energy is 401.5±0.5 eV, and the ratio of (the number of first nitrogen atoms/the number of second nitrogen atoms) is 1.02 or more. The electrode material is obtained by a method including a first calcination step of calcining a carbon material under an atmosphere of inert gas, and a second calcination step of calcining under existence of ammonia following to the first calcination step.SELECTED DRAWING: None
