An environment recognition device 1 includes detection means 12 for red signal which detects a red signal Lr etc., of a traffic light S based upon an image T picked up by imaging means 2; and arrow signal extraction means 13 of extracting an arrow signal A imaged in a search region Rs set based upon a position of the detected red signal Lr etc., in the image T. The arrow signal extraction means 13 switches a method of recognizing a direction that the arrow signal A indicates according to a distance Z from a local vehicle MC to the red signal Lr etc., in the actual space, and recognizes the direction that the arrow signal A indicates based upon mutual position relation between the arrow signal A and red signal Lr etc., in the image T within a first predetermined section Sec1 far from the local vehicle MC.
