To obtain the subject catalyst capable of producing an ethylene oligomer from ethylene in high selectivity without using aluminoxane and also without causing increased byproduct polyethylene yield, and useful for producing e.g. plasticizers by including a specific chromium complex and an alkylmetallic compound.
This catalyst is obtained by including at least the following two components: (A) a chromium complex coordinated with a cyclic multidentate amine of the formula [(m) is 3-5; G is a (substituted) bivalent hydrocarbon; L is a 1-20C t-alkyl or 1-20C t-silyl] and (B) an alkylmetallic compound, wherein it is preferable that the above multidentate amine is a cyclic tridentate amine, esp. 1,3,5-tri-t-butyl-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane, and the above complex is represented by the formula: ACrBn (A is a cyclic multidentate amine in the component A; (n) is 1-3; B is H, a 1-10C alkyl, a 1-10C carboxylate, or the like).
