This production method of a cyclic olefin polymer is to contact (C) a cyclic olefin expressed by the formula (R1 to R12 are each H, a 1-20C hydrocarbon, or the like; R9 and R11 or R12, or R10 and R11 or R12 may mutually bond together to form a ring; (k) is 0 or ≥1) with a catalyst comprising (A) an organic transition metal compound expressed by the formula: CpMA1nA23-n (Cp is a group having a cyclopentadienyl skeleton; A1 is a halogen, H, a 1-10C alkyl, or the like; A2 is a 6-20C aryl, a 7-20C aralkyl, or the like; (n) is 0-2; M is a transition metal of the fourth family of the periodic table) and (B) an organic aluminumoxy compound (preferably an alkylaluminoxane).
