Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suitably discharge and reduce Nox which is absorbed in an absorbing and reducing type lean Nox catalyst according to a stratified degree in an engine combustion chamber.
SOLUTION: A device comprises an absorbing and reducing type lean Nox catalyst 17 for absorbing Nox when an air-fuel ratio is in a lean condition and for discharging and reducing its absorbed Nox when the air-fuel ratio is in a rich condition in an exhaust system, means 27 for changing stratified degree of mixture in a combustion chamber by varying flow speed of swirl flow which flows in from a helical port or by varying a fuel injection timing in an intake stroke, and means 30 for correcting a rich time or a timing for making the air-fuel ratio in a rich condition according to the stratified degree.
