A mold of a face plate 22 id formed by laser-etching of grooves for picture elements on the mold. Detail of such grooves for picture elements is reproduced on the plastic face plate 22 by injection-molding or compression- molding of transparent plastics. Dentail of the picture elements and detail of depths are accomplished with microscopic accuracy by such molding. Boundaries between picture element areas, including liquid crystal and phosphor material, act as spacers for separating the face plate 22 and a back plate 20 from each other.
