Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction stir joining apparatus by which the defect in joining caused by a sheet gap between the objects to be joined can be prevented.
SOLUTION: The apparatus comprises a tool holder 42 mounted with a joining tool 21 freely attachably and detachably, a tool rotation driving means 43 rotatively driving the tool holder 42 around a reference axis line L1, a tool displacement driving means 44 driving the tool holder 42 so as to be displaced along the reference axis line L1, and a pressing mechanism applying pressurizing force by a value predetermined in the reference axis line L1 to the objects 22 to be joined. The pressurizing force is applied to the objects 22, so that the members 22a and 22b to be joined are deformed or displaced, and can mutually be abutted. The joining tool 21 is driven, and friction stir joining is performed in a state where a sheet gap D1 between the objects 22 is canceled, so that the defect in the joining caused by the sheet gap D1 between the objects 22 can be prevented.
