To provide a high density recording/reproducing compatible type optical pickup device wherein optical disks different in format are interchanged by one objec tive lens.
The device is provided with a first light branching means which includes a first light source 11 for a first format disk, a second light source 21 for a second format disk and the objective lens suitable for the first format optical disk and an optical wavelength radiated from the first light source and which branches incident light into first light and second light, a second photodetector 29 having a first light receiving part and a second light receiving part which respectively receive the first light and the second light to be reflected while irradiating the optical disk from the second light source and performs photoelectric conversion, and a second signal processing part 20 which corrects a chromatic aberration by the difference of wavelengths of light radiated from the first light source an the second light source and/or a spherical aberration by the difference of substrate thickness between the first and second format optical disks based on a signal detected via the first light receiving part and the second light receiving part and which detects a reproduced signal of the second format optical disk.
