To provide a method for operating a heating furnace for storing pig iron, which secures a supply amount of molten pig iron to a smelting furnace and stably operates the smelting furnace, by adjusting the quantity of components in the preliminarily treated molten pig iron, inhibiting a temperature drop of the molten pig iron due to imbalance in the supply amount of the molten pig iron to the smelting furnace, and adequately melting scrap iron to increase the absolute quantity.
This operation method comprises charging the molten pig iron 16 for which the preliminary treatment of one or both of dephosphorization and desulfurization have been carried out, into the furnace 10 for storing the pig iron provided with a heating means 15, independently adjusting the temperature and the quantity of the components of the molten pig iron 16 in the furnace 10 for storing the pig iron, manufacturing a molten quasi-pig iron by adding the scrap iron to the molten pig iron 16, and supplying the molten quasi-pig iron to the smelting furnace.
