Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject hydrogenated product excellent in thermal stability, resistance to thermal decomposition, light transmission properties, etc. by polymerizing a specific cyclic olefin-based monomer in the presence of ring- opening metathesis living catalyst, by hydrogenating the resultant polymer in the presence of hydrogenation catalyst, and then by partially conducting hydrolysis or alcoholysis of the hydrogenated polymer.
SOLUTION: This hydrogenated product is obtained by polymerizing a cyclic olefin-based monomer of formula I [R2 and R3 are each H or the like; (m) is 0-3] in the presence of ring-opening metathesis living catalysis, by hydrogenating the resultant polymer in the presence of hydrogenation catalyst, and then by partially conducting hydrolysis or alcoholysis of the hydrogenated polymer, is composed of (A) a structural unit of formula II [R1 is a 1-20C alkyl or the like] or (B) a structural unit of formula III, and has the molar ratio of the unit A to the unit B of (5:95)-(95:5) and the ratio of a weight average molecular weight to a number average molecular weight, (Mw/Mn) of 1.0-2.0.
