Abstract:
PURPOSE:To produce a high-strength sintered material of inorganic fibers by sintering a layered material of the inorganic fibers made of specified constituting components and having the inorganic substance surface layers formed through a boundary layer composed of carbon under a prescribed heating condition. CONSTITUTION:A heat treatment is applied to inorganic fibers made of (a) an amorphous material composed of Si, M, C and O, (b) an assembly body of beta-SiC, MC, their solid solution and/or an aggregate composed of fine crystalline particles of MC1 to 4 [M is Ti or Zr] and C and an amorphous material of Si0z and MO2 or (c) a mixture of (a) and (b) in an oxidative atmosphere. This treatment gives an inorganic fiber having an inner layer composed of (a), (b) or (c), a carbonaceous boundary layer of 1 to 200nm and a surface layer made of (d) an amorphous material composed of Si, M and O, (e) a crystalline agregate composed of SiO2 and MO2 or (f) a mixture of (d) and (e). The resultant inorganic fibers are put in layers and the layered material of the inorganic fibers is heated in three stages respectively at room temperature to 1400 deg.C, 1400 to 1750 deg.C and 1750 to 1900 deg.C in an atmosphere of an inert gas under pressure, thus producing the objective sintered material of inorganic fibers.
