To make color breakup and flicker less perceivable without increasing time-sharing color number in a frame and also without increasing a data transfer quantity.
A drive pattern which drives a liquid crystal element of LCOS104 is divided into three drive patterns. Each region in a display screen of a screen 109 driven by each of the three drive patterns is predetermined and is driven according to each drive pattern. The first drive pattern outputs video data R(n), G(n) and B(n) sequentially in synchronization with time-sharing lighting of a light source in one-frame period. The second drive pattern outputs G(n), B(n) and R(n) sequentially in one-frame period which is delayed 1/3-frame period. The third drive pattern outputs B(n), R(n) and G(n) sequentially in synchronization with time-sharing lighting of light sources of 101G, 101B and 101R in one-frame period which is delayed 2/3-frame period to drive the liquid crystal element.
