The image display device displaying a two-dimensional image, so that an observer observes the two-dimensional image as a magnified virtual image by a virtual image optical system includes: a light guide plate 13 totally internally reflecting and guiding a parallel luminous flux group satisfying an internal total reflection condition; a first diffraction grating 14 diffracting and reflecting the parallel luminous flux group made incident on the light guide plate from the outside and having a different incident angle, as it is, so as to satisfy the internal total reflection condition; and a second diffraction grating 15 diffracting and reflecting the parallel luminous flux group totally internally reflected and guided by the light guide plate, so as to be out of the internal total reflection condition and emitting the parallel luminous flux group from the light guide plate. The parallel luminous flux group having a different incident angle is made incident on the light guide plate from the outside. In the parallel luminous flux groups different in viewing angle from each other, advancing in the light guide plate, while being totally reflected, the number of total reflections in a period up to emission from the light guide plate are different from each other by the difference of each viewing angle.
