To enable the formation of an image with good tint and a high definition by using a heptamethinecyanine compd. as a dye for a heat-developable photosensitive material.
A heat-developable photosensitive material which has a photosensitive layer contg. a silver halide and a reducing agent and a nonphotosensitive layer, both layers formed on a substrate, and in which either of the two layers contain a heptamethinecyanine dye, is subjected to image exposure and then teated to form a silver image. The heptamethinecyanie dye is represented by the formula (Z1 is CR11R12, O, S, or NR13; Z2 is CR21R22, O, S, or NR23; R1 and R2 are each alkyl, alkenyl, or aralkyl; R3 is H, halogen, alkyl, cyano, SO2R31, OR32, SR33, etc.; R11, R12, R21, and R22 are each alkyl, etc.; R13 and R23 are each alkyl, alkenyl, or aralkyl; R31, R32, and R33 are each alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, etc.; R34 is H, alkyl, or aryl; R35 is alkyl, aryl, acyl, etc.; X is an anion; and n is 0 or 1).
