By achieving conduction of an electrode of a memory substrate 303 for recording the characteristics of the developing device and a contact 304, the image forming apparatus reads information from the memory substrate. It is set so that the apparatus has failed in reading the information at a first detection position (A). Here, a developing unit is once rotated to a position until the memory substrate 303 and the contact 304 do not come into contact with each other from the first detection position (B). Thereafter, a voltage is applied to the contact 304 (C), and the memory substrate is again brought into contact with the contact 304 in this a state. A position where reading can be performed is searched, and a second reading is performed at that position (D).
