To effectively achieve an effect of multipath printing by preventing floating of a leading edge of paper when starting the multipath printing.
An image forming apparatus includes: a conveying means that intermittently feeds paper from a paper feeding device to a printing area; a platen 4 that keeps the paper flat in the printing area; a suction fan 5 that is arranged under the platen 4 and gives suction force to the paper; a printing head 6 that ejects ink to the paper on the platen 4 to form an image; a carriage 7 that moves the printing head 6; an image processing means that masks printing data by a printing pattern; and a controller 20 that performs drive control of the conveying means, the suction mechanism, the printing head and the carriage. When the printing control means determines to perform the multipath printing in which printing is performed by superposing images by N times (N is a natural number equal to or above 2), it performs initial printing by multipath printing in which printing is performed by the number of times smaller than N times in at least initial one band or single-path printing in which printing is performed only by one path, and performs the multipath printing in which printing is performed by superposing the images by N times after performing the initial printing.
