In order to bring a recording head 12 on a carriage 6 down from its head-up state, a drive motor 50 drives a second gear 58 to drive a head drive cam 36 to rotate so that the recording head 12 is brought down and a ribbon rolling axis 64 is driven by a first gear 56 to roll an ink ribbon round a ribbon rolling axis 64. And in order to bring the head 12 into a head-up state from its head-down state, by rotating the first gear 56 by the drive motor 50, the cam 36 is driven to rotate so that the head 12 is put into a head-up state and the axis 64 is rotated by the gear 58 through a rolling gear to remove the slackness from the ink ribbon.
